Eastern Subterranean Termites

The most common type of them in North America is a soil feeding type which is also know as the subterranean termite. This type is known to feed on cotton, paper, wood, bush and tree roots. They especially enjoy the cellulose part of the wood and will devour anything in their path that contains it.

These termites can be found throughout a building whether it be the rafters of the attic or the foundation in the basement. They are found by looking for their mud tubes or by finding the. Sometimes you may even find the wings of the kings and queens of the colony lying around. You need to be on the watch for their tunnels and tubes as the swarms are not generally easy to see. This means that many homes are being destroyed without the owners even realizing it.

Eastern Subterranean Termites can develop colonies with up to 5 million individuals in number. However, the average is closer to the 30-40 thousand range. They have what is called swarm intelligence which means that they act and they move as if they were one entity. It is not uncommon for their colony to live for up to 30 years.

Termite Control: Drywood

Drywood Termites live in dry wood and therefore can be found in everything from wooden rocking chairs and bookshelves to hardwood flooring or walls. Of the hundreds of dry wood species, only a handful are found in the United States.

One subspecies of the Drywood is the Powderpost termite which is commonly found in the southeastern and middle parts of North America. The common name for this type is the furniture termite because they will build their nests within the furniture. Western Drywood are another subspecies that mainly inhabit the western side of the United States.

Their colonies tend to be relatively small in comparison to subterranean. However, the danger lies in that there can be multiple colonies within a single dwelling and rather than living in tubes and huts, they live in the wood itself and will tunnel along the grain of the wood. Also, unlike subterranean, they do not require any contact with the soil to live.

Drywood termites begin by working in teams. A male and female pair will work their way into the wood chosen for the nest. The opening through which they enter the wood is sealed with a plug of brown cement-like material about 1/8-inch in diameter. They then excavate a chamber behind the plug where the queen lays the first eggs.

The Drywood can be found by their fecal pellets that are 6 sided and concave on each side. They will also leave behind a fine powdering of wood which resembles fine sawdust.

As their name suggests, the Desert Subterranean Termite is located in hot, dry, desert areas of the United States. This means they can be found in the McKinney, Texas area depending on the levels of humidity and rainfall.

Desert Subterranean Termites

As their only species that has the ability to burrow and feed in dry conditions, Desert Subterranean Termites are found in areas of the United States with dry climates. This tends to be New Mexico, Arizona, Western Texas, and Southern California.

They differ in appearance from other termites in that they have long slender mandibles instead of the normal stout wide mandibles seen in other species. In addition, their soldiers are much smaller allowing them to penetrate smaller cracks and openings than other species.

Signs Of Infestation

When a home or business is infested with desert subterranean termites one will often see small mud tubes hanging from shelves, overhangs, wood ceilings, and such. Their food of choice, like many others is the cellulose part of the wood.

People often discover they have been infested by finding damaged wood. You may also find mud tunnels extending from the ground up the woodwork. If you suspect you have an infestation, you can call us to schedule your termite inspection.
